Cheap 4x4 Hire Alice Springs

Cheap 4x4 and 4WD Campervan hire Alice Springs

Day 1. Alice Springs

We arrived in Alice at lunch time. I gotta say, Alice Springs was a bit freaky. It’s a small town surrounded by thousands of miles of nothing, and as we walked towards Todd Plaza we could see random indigenous groups walking in from the bush, barefoot and zombie-like. We hit Bojangles - a classic little cowboy pub. The guy behind the counter was mental man, too much time in the desert...

We hung around Alice for the day and watched the sun set over the MacDonnel Ranges. The flies were relentless, but the beer was cold and there was a kind of peace that fell over the town as the sun descended - as if the land was relieved to embrace the curtain of night and escape from the incredible heat of the day.

Days 2 & 3. The MacDonnell Ranges

We picked up the Wicked 4x4 in the morning and hit the road. I was super-excited to get out of civilisation and see some desert. And when I heard that we could actually go swimming in some of the waterholes, I was losing my shit! The heat was insane so when we got to Ellery Creek Bighole, I ran straight in to the water. It was an amazing colour - but it was FREEZING!!! I lasted about 2 minutes before my balls shrivelled to the size of tic tacs.

The MacDonnell Ranges were the real bonus treat of the trip. Because it’s kind of overshadowed by Ayers Rock and Kings Canyon - The MacDonnell Ranges are way less populated by tourists and Japanese Tour buses. Canyons and creeks and gorges abound with breathtaking regularity. The Wicked 4x4 was yet to be fully tested on the unsealed 4x4 tracks, but already I felt like some kind of psychedelic ‘king-of-the-road’.

Days 4. Kings Canyon

Heading south and the land gets flatter and flatter. The MacDonnell Ranges fade into the distance and the land ahead starts to look like a British backpacker on Bondi Beach - red as fuck! It was gettting dark and the thought of driving on a dirt road at night with kangaroos the size of elephants playing kamikaze hopscotch on our windscreen gave me the heebee jeebees. So we pulled over and slept on the roof of the 4x4 after a few spliffs. Georgie was out cold and I was fucking starving man. So I grabbed our esky out of the back and scoffed down a bunch of chips and lollies. When we awoke - a dingo was eating out of our esky! We shooed him away (litterally! I through my shoe at him) and continued south to the amazing Kings Canyon...

Days 5. Ayers Rock & The Olgas

I’d wanted to see Ayers Rock since I was a kid, so this was a dream-come-true for me! About 30kms outside of Kata Tjuta National Park, the unmistakable silhouette of Uluru made itself known on the horizon. We paid the $25 park entry fee and turned back towards Ayers Rock Resort to put up the tent so we’d be ready to head out for a sunset viewing. And after all those km’s and years of waiting - Ayers Rock blew my fucking mind! It’s HUGE and postcard perfect. We sat on the roof of the van with a glass of champagne and watched the sun dip off the horizon and traded roadtrip stories with an Aussie couple next to us. I was slightly jealous - they had a sweet-ass Kombi Van and had been cruising OZ for the past 8 months...

The Olgas were equally inspiring. So much bigger in real-life than we had anticipated! They’re ancient and amazing and only about 45kms further West of Ayers Rock. After lunch they let people climb Ayers Rock, so I doused myself in water and started climbing. After about 50 feet of climbing, I realised that years of smoking and drinking had taken their toll. I sat and watched as a group of 12 year-olds sprinted ahead of me without breaking a sweat, while I drowned in my own puddle of shame and sweat. Still, the view was good...

Days 6. The Red Centre Way

We took the sealed road back to Alice Springs - The Red Centre Way. The roadkill gets pretty thick around these parts, but who fucking new there’d be mammoth camel carcasses lining the roadside?!!! Awesome! I stopped to buy a beer in Curtain Springs and a fucking EMU attacked me! I used to like emus.

We slept the night in a tiny caravan park adjacent to Mount Ebenezer Roadhouse and reflected on the trip and in the morning, made our way back up to Alice to drop the 4x4 off and fly back to the real world. All-in-all I don’t think the trip would have been the same in a normal 4x4. There’s something about a psychedelic paintjob that says “I’m on holiday and I don’t give a fuck man”...
