We landed in Broome late in the afternoon and didn’t have to pick up the 4x4 til early in the morning. So we had a few beers and slept on the beach to save some coin. The sunsets in Broome are world-renown as the water glows a golden orange on the super-calm Indian Ocean. When we woke up, Tommy’s face was covered in sand - he’d belted himself on JD’s and coke al night at one of the little local cowboy bars and was too smashed to get into his sleepng bag.
Cape Leveque
We picked up the Wicked 4x4 from a friendly dude (Chris, I think) and headed straight up to Cape Leveque. The road’s not too bad, but all the bumps on a dirt track aren’t too great for a hangover. About 220kms North of Broome, Cape Leveque is an oasis in the desert. The water is a fluorescent blue and so clear you can see the stingrays swim precariously around your feet. It feels like you’ve reached the end of the earth up there - and it’s hard to believe this land is connected to the concrete jungles of the East.
We spent most of the afternoon snorkelling in and around the Cape, while Pete and Sammy tried their hands at a bit of mud-crabbing. The boys had no luck with the crabs so it was noodles for dinner again!
Windjana Gorge & Bell Gorge
Boab Trees are everywhere in the Kimberly’s. They’re amazing looking trees - they literally look like something out of a Tim Burton film. In the 1800’s policeman and settlers would use the trees to temporarily detain prisoners, and the thought crossed our minds that if Tommy didn’t stop farting in the car we’d have to lock him up and bail.
Windjana Gorge is an astonishing sight - apparently it was a coral reef about buzzillion years ago, but I was more interested in the crocidiles as we approached the Lennard River. Fucking millions of the bastards! I was no longer tempted to go for a swim anyway!
The Tunnel Creek Cave System is mind-blowing and full of life - bats, frogs, fish....freaky! Definately worth a look if you’re on the Gibb! Bell Gorge and Bell Falls are typical of the area - AMAZING! The water in Bell Falls runs year round and we made the 20 minute walk down to the river below, where Micky threw all his clothes off and leapt in for a swim. That night we stayed at a little campground called Silent Grove and downed a few more bevvies...
The Cockburn Range
As we drove up to the Cockburn Range the dick jokes started. The Pentecost River Crossing is a nice little challenge and the scenery continues to amaze. The problem with the Gibb River Road - like most natural wonders - is that you just can’t capture the ancientness, the size and the beauty of the land. Long fields of Sahara Grass soon give way to Boab Trees and red, red dirt and it feels like the last thing you’d expect to see is water - but there’s Gorges everywhere!
The Road to Darwin
With so much to discover on the Gibb River Road - I can’t tell you anymore. Our Wicked 4x4 did the job, was cheap - and everyone we came across had a laugh about the little quote on the back - “If I wanted a bitch, I’d buy a dog”... It was 14 days of absolute wild, crazy awesomeness!!!!
